Walking routes in Vienna suitable for Shabbat
In Vienna, it is recommended to walk around the First District on Shabbat—specifically near the Stadttempel, which is a 10-minute walk from the Jewish quarter in the Second District.
Vienna’s Great Synagogue is located in the First District.
Built in the early 19th century, this magnificent synagogue is the only one out of the dozens that existed in Vienna before the war to have survived the events of Kristallnacht and the Holocaust.
It is highly recommended to attend the Friday evening service at the Great Synagogue, it is a truly impressive experience, accompanied by a choir.
Not far from the Great Synagogue lies Judenplatz (Jews’ Square), a medieval square marking the site of Jewish settlement in Austria dating back to the 12th century. The area later became a ghetto where Jewish community life flourished, featuring synagogues and other public buildings.
In 2005, a Holocaust memorial was erected in the center of the square to commemorate the 65,000 Austrian Jews who perished in the Holocaust.
Designed by artist Rachel Whiteread, the memorial takes the form of a white, cube-like structure featuring carved library shelves that symbolize the spiritual tradition of the scholars of the “People of the Book.”
You can see a great deal of beautiful, impressive architecture, gardens, and parks in the area.

The Rathaus (City Hall)—a massive municipal building constructed using approximately 30 million bricks,now serves as a venue for markets and events.
If time permits and the weather is pleasant, it is recommended to take the “Ring”—the circular road that encircles the First District.
The circuit takes about an hour and a half, and along the way, you can see many of the famous buildings.
