The town of Leżajsk, where Rabbi Elimelech of Leżajsk (author of the “Noam Elimelech”) lived and was active, is located in southeastern Poland.
Rabbi Elimelech of Leżajsk lived approximately 300 years ago and was one of the most influential figures in the Hasidic movement during its early days.
He was a prominent disciple of the Maggid of Mezeritch and the teacher of Hasidic giants such as the Seer of Lublin, the Maggid of Kozhnitz, and Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Rimanov.
Under his leadership, Leżajsk became a spiritual center for Poland and the surrounding regions, and following his passing, his gravesite became a pilgrimage destination.
Sources state that Rabbi Elimelech promised that anyone who visited his grave would not depart this world without having repented.
The anniversary of Rabbi Elimelech’s passing (Yahrtzeit) falls on the 21st of Adar, at which time the town teems with Jews who have arrived from all over the world.
The gravesite is open 24 hours a day, all year round.
In the building adjacent to the tomb, visitors are offered light refreshments, including hot soup, bread, vegetables, cakes, and hot drinks.
Everything is freely available around the clock.
