As part of my work on the guide to Austria, I receive countless requests from people for help in finding a kosher hotel in Salzburg – a suitable place to stay for kosher observant in the Salzburg region of Austria.
It is important for everyone to find a pleasant, clean and affordable place in the popular Salzburg area. But religious and mitzvot-observant people have several other parameters in their search for a kosher hotel in Salzburg: a private kitchen equipped so that it is possible to prepare kosher food, adaptation for Shabbat-observants – a manual key and not an electronic one, without sensors, an option for Minyan and more.
So I decided to conduct a poll among those who traveled to Austria, asking for recommendations on good places to stay in Salzburg. While investigating, I also heard warnings about certain places to stay that were disappointing and unsuitable. In an unusual step, I decided to also put dis-recommendations, so that people know what to be careful of when choosing a B&B or hotel.
Alpen-Karawanserai – a spa hotel located in the ski town of Saalbach-Hinterglam in the Austrian Alps. In the hotel, a midrash with a Torah book and holy books. The hotel also has a mikveh. Part of the town around the hotel is mixed.
Kosher activity times: Passover and the summer months. Kosher: strictly kosher under the supervision of Rabbi Avraham Yona Schwartz, Vienna. Meals only: guests from outside are not allowed to dine on site. Prayers: In the month of August, there are several minyans a day. Guests outside the hotel can also participate in prayers, but are not guaranteed a free seat.

B&Bs and Vacation Rentals are Recommended in Flachau
Falchau is a very sought-after town among Jewish travelers, and is highly recommended for a stay because of its proximity to the main road and the city of Salzburg. Many sites and attractions are less than an hour away from it and it is extremely attractive.
In winter, the place is popular because of the many ski facilities that are part of the ski chain (Amadé), one of the largest in Europe.
This is a very popular destination for religious people as well, so usually during the summer season, prayer Minyanim are organized there. Chalav Yisrael, Pat Israel and other kosher products can be obtained during the “between times” period at the local supermarket.
Tip: For a stay of 2 nights or more in the summer season in Flachau, you get the Flachau Summer Card free of charge from the host.
This card includes many benefits: free use of cable cars in the area (one time), daily guided tours and a varied program of activities in the area.
In addition, the card entitles you to discounts on a variety of sites and attractions such as: Lucky Flitzer slides, mini golf, Hohenwerpen Castle, Lichtenstein Channel and more.
Bergfink apartments
Excellent holiday apartment in the center of Falchau, with 3 bedrooms. Suitable for 6 people + a baby.
The apartment is well maintained and beautiful, and includes a kitchen equipped with everything you need to prepare meals.
Suitable for Shabbat observant: regular mechanical key, no sensors except at the entrance to the building (which can be covered).
Alpenchalets Flachauer Gutshof
Charming holiday apartments in the center of Falchau, suitable for up to 12 people.
The apartments include a kitchen equipped with everything needed for cooking – oven, stove, large refrigerator, electric kettle and more. Living room with dining area, balcony and parking.

Apartments are suitable for up to 6 people. Lovely view and excellent location for a star trip.

A charming apartment hotel in a quiet location. The apartments and studio units are spacious, designed in a rustic style and include a kitchenette, with a view of the mountains and wireless internet. Most of them are equipped with a balcony. Many play facilities for children and laundry services for a fee. In winter, a free ski bus stops 200 meters away.
Hoagascht
Excellent boutique apartment hotel in the center of Falchau.
Beautiful apartments in a variety of sizes, suitable for up to 10 people. All apartments include a kitchen/bathtub with a refrigerator, stove, microwave, electric kettle and coffee machine. The larger apartments also have an oven and a dishwasher. There is also a washer and dryer.
Around the building there is a well-kept yard with grass and swings, and a rest area that includes a jacuzzi and sauna.
Enjoy The Alps
Excellent and beautiful apartment hotel in Falchau, right at the entrance to the town in front of the supermarket.
The suites are well maintained and incredibly clean, and include a balcony overlooking a great view. Each unit has a kitchen equipped with a small refrigerator, stove, microwave, electric kettle and even a coffee machine. Some apartments also include an oven and a washing machine.The hotel is surrounded by a well-kept garden with a swimming pool (in season), and a jacuzzi that can be ordered for private entertainment that also includes drinks. There is also a free health center for hotel guests. A shared washing machine is available to guests, as well as an iron and ironing board.
The location of the hotel is excellent – within walking distance of the cable car and the amusement park with the Lucky-Plitzer mountain slides. Free adjacent parking. Recommended from personal experience.
Also suitable for families! There are also apartments with 3 rooms and more suitable for up to 22 people.
Shabbat: Although the key to the suites is manual, and there is also a side door to the building that opens manually, the place is not suitable for Shabbat observant because of lighting sensors that turn on automatically in the corridor.
OFENTÜRL alpine living
Excellent apartment hotel (score 9.4 on Booking!) modern and well maintained in Falchau. The apartments are suitable for up to 6 people, and include a fully equipped kitchen with everything you need for cooking. The place faces a wonderful view and offers a large yard with grass and playgrounds and free parking.
Please note: the location is not central. Located on the edge of town.

A charming accommodation by the lake in Palachau.
Apartments of various sizes (up to 8 people per apartment), which include a fully equipped kitchen, most with a balcony.
Around the house there is a yard with playground equipment and adjacent parking.

Excellent apartment hotel (score 9.7 in Booking!) with a wonderful view of the mountains. Especially suitable for families, with apartments for up to 9 people that include a fully equipped kitchen. There is a children’s complex, a yard with facilities, bicycles and helmets to borrow and a dedicated playground. Laundry services and free adjacent parking.
Shabbat: The entrance to the building is through an automatic door (you can arrange before Shabbat that they will open for you). The entrance to the apartments and rooms is done with a regular key and not a card.
Haus Carina
Comfortable and cheap holiday apartments in the center of Falchau.
A studio apartment and a 2-bedroom apartment, both include a kitchen/van with a fridge, stove, electric kettle and more.
Suitable for Shabbat Observers: option to deactivate the automatic lighting on Shabbat.

A charming apartment hotel in Eben im Pungau, about a twenty minute drive from Falchau.
Apartments in a variety of sizes, from a studio apartment, through two and three-room apartments to a complete vacation home with 9 bedrooms. The apartments include a kitchen equipped with a refrigerator, oven, stove, electric kettle, coffee machine and more. Free adjacent parking.
The place has an indoor swimming pool (in season) and a yard with playgrounds for children. The complex also has a horse farm and a petting zoo. The site is near the forest with hiking trails.
For Shabbat Observers: The automatic lighting can be deactivated on Shabbat.

Accommodation apartments in the center of Falchau, a short walk from the “Lucky Flitzer” cable cars and slides.
The place offers apartments and rooms with a balcony. A well-kept yard with lawns in front of the stunning view, a children’s playroom and adjacent parking.

- Almdorf Almlust –
A large resort that includes cabins, apartments and guest rooms with a stunning view. Suitable for families! There are 3-room apartments suitable for 6 people. The place has a ski school, a sophisticated spa complex that includes an indoor pool, a large garden with a swimming pool and barbecue facilities.
The accommodation units are decorated in a traditional alpine style with wooden floors and furniture. The cabins and apartments include a fully equipped kitchen, and some also have a balcony.
Haus Maier
A vacation apartment with 2 bedrooms and a balcony in Falchau.
The apartment has a fully equipped kitchen for preparing meals including a coffee machine. Free adjacent parking.
Ena Appartements
Excellent new holiday apartments in Atlanmarkt, about a ten minute drive from Falchau.
The apartments include a kitchen with everything you need to prepare meals and there is also free private parking.
This summer (2022) the MPREIS branch in Altenmarket will have kosher dairy products.
Gut Maierlehen
Vacation apartments on a secluded and charming farm with a wonderful view in Radstadt, about 8 minutes drive from Falchau.
Beautiful and clean apartments with a fully equipped kitchen. Free adjacent parking.
Vacation Rentals in Saalbach-Hinterglemm
Hinterglemm and the town next to it – Saalbach-Hinterglemm, is an excellent area to stay in Austria, especially for observant people. During the “Between the Times” period in August, prayer services are held there, and you can get strictly kosher Israel milk and Fat Israel products at the local supermarket.
Another advantage of the place is that Interglam is in a central location, near sites and attractions: In Interglam there is a huge and well-invested rope park, one of the largest in Europe. There are quite a few attractions in Saalbach (a detailed list on the website www.saalbach.com), and even the possibility of nearby and nice shopping.
Highly recommended: the water show in Zell am See, half an hour’s drive from Interglam. Spectacular free show by the lake on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday nights.
Update for summer 2022: The Alpen Karawanserai hotel in the town of Hinterglemm will probably not operate in a kosher format this year. Despite this, observant Jews are coming there this year as well, and most likely there will be minyans after T’Bav.
Recommended Vacation Rentals in Hinterglemm, Austria
Adler Resort
Excellent resort. Apartments that include a fully equipped kitchenette, a balcony or terrace and a view of the mountains. The hotel has a spa area that includes an indoor swimming pool, an outdoor pool, a fitness area, a sauna and a steam bath. Please note: there are also individual guest rooms that do not include a kitchen, you must select the desired option when booking.

An excellent and inexpensive boutique hotel in Saalbach-Hinterglemm.
All rooms include a mini-bar fridge, electric kettle and coffee machine. Most of them also have an attached balcony with a view of the mountains. There are also family rooms and suites, suitable for up to 6 people per unit.

- Milly by Easy Holiday Appartments -Small and charming accommodation apartment. The apartment has only one bedroom, a fully equipped kitchen, a balcony and a view of the mountains. Suitable for a couple (+ child).
Less Recommended Places to Stay in Hinterglemm Salzburg
- Appartements Forsthaus by Easy Holiday – Apartments in Hinterglam, some of them offer a dining area and/or a balcony. Some also include an equipped kitchen.
Please note: the place is above a pub, which causes noise and an atmosphere not suitable for observant people.
- Ferienhaus Kos – A less recommended apartment building, the entire apartment is actually inside a stairwell with no separating door and no privacy.

In the last year, a Chabad emissary opened an apartment hotel and another hotel with guest rooms in the town of Mariafar.
The hotel provides Shabbat meals and prepared food only for hotel guests.
Those who are not hotel guests can purchase wine, challah, milk and bread by order.

Recommended Vacation Rentals in WAGRAIN
About a quarter of an hour’s drive from Falchau is Wagrain, a popular resort and skiing town. It is located in a high valley, near nature sites and attractions and is therefore very suitable as a starting point for a sightseeing tour in the Salzburg region.
In the summer, mainly during the “bein hazmanim”, observant Jews come to rest in the town, so it is not difficult to find a minyan for prayer in the area.
Landhaus Rustika
A charming apartment complex (score 9.5 on Booking!) is especially suitable for families with children.
The apartments include a balcony overlooking a wonderful view, wireless internet and parking. There is also a spa with a sauna, jacuzzi and more.
The complex also has an outdoor swimming pool, a game room, playgrounds for children, a barbecue corner and a petting zoo.

Dormio Hotel Obertraun
Most similar to a holiday village in Salzburg: A resort in Obertraun, in a prime location in Salzburg on the edge of a lake with a view, close to the 5 fingers lookout and the town of Hallstatt. There is a swimming pool, playgrounds, etc.
